Doctor Roberta Kalafut has made comprehensive spinal care and musculoskeletal medicine her focus for more than 20 years. In her current capacity as a physician partner and original founder of SpineAbilene in Abilene, Texas, Doctor Roberta Kalafut brings her dedication to the forefront of her practice, treating patients with back and neck pain. Since the establishment of SpineAbilene, Doctor Roberta Kalafut has assisted patients with symptoms ranging from herniated discs to scoliosis and stenosis. Doctor Roberta Kalafut, a graduate of Youngstown State University and Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, currently serves the Texas Medical Association and the Taylor-Jones-Haskell County Medical Society. Throughout the years, Doctor Roberta Kalafut has thrived at hospitals across the country, receiving first-hand preparation for starting and managing her own clinic. A Chief Resident of the Interinstitutional Residency Program in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Sinai Hospital-Johns Hopkins Hospital, Doctor Roberta Kalafut developed a call schedule for the two facilities, promoting stronger inter-hospital cooperation. From 1997 to 2004, Doctor Roberta Kalafut worked as Vice Chief of Staff at the Abilene Regional Medical Center. During her career at the Center, Doctor Roberta Kalafut served as the Chair of the Department of Medicine, Medical Director for the Skilled Nursing Unit, and Chair of the Credential Committee. Doctor Roberta Kalafut served as Co-Medical director of the Rehabilitation Hospital along with her husband, Doctor Edward Brandecker, for four years. While operating as Medical Director, Doctor Roberta Kalafut played an integral role in securing additional funds and a valuable certification from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. In 2009, Doctor Roberta Kalafut was appointed by Governor Rick Perry to the Texas Medical Board’s District Review Committee. As a member of the Committee, Doctor Roberta Kalafut is responsible for conducting hearings regarding disciplinary action and is involved with settlement meetings concerning alleged physician violations of the state’s Medical Practice Act. Taking the humanitarianism of medicine above and beyond, Doctor Roberta Kalafut was instrumental in helping a Bosnian refugee and her family immigrate to the United States. Doctor Roberta Kalafut assisted the refugee, a bilateral upper extremity amputee, in finding necessary rehabilitation. Doctor Roberta Kalafut holds board certifications in pain medicine from the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the American Board of Anesthesiology, and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc. An avid gardener, Doctor Roberta Kalafut can often be found volunteering with Master Gardener or working in her Abilene home garden.
